It is estimated that half of the female population and a growing number of men have spider veins and mild varicose veins. Often contributing factors are heredity, weight gain, pregnancy and hormonal changes, along with occupations that require long periods of sitting, standing and air travel.
What are Spider & Varicose Veins?
Spider veins (telangiectasias) are tiny purple & red blood vessels found most commonly on the thigh or lower legs. They are hereditary and can form anywhere on the leg, from the top of the thigh to the ankle.
Varicose veins differ from spider veins in a number of ways. Generally, varicose veins are larger, usually more than a quarter inch in diameter, darker in color, tend to bulge and can become quite painful.
What is Sclerotherapy?
This is a treatment designed to diminish the appearance of spider veins in a simple, safe and effective procedure. The problematic vein is injected with a solution, which irritates the vein wall and causes it to close. The procedure takes anywhere between 15 – 45 minutes depending on size of the area treated. You are recommended to wear over the counter compression stockings for 4-7 days after the procedure to achieve optimal results and refrain from any strenuous activities. Most patients who undergo 3 treatments will see the disappearance of treated veins within 1-3 months.
